Challenge:
The client needed a simple way to identify their most valuable customers inside WooCommerce, but the default admin screens didn’t provide a usable ranking view. They wanted to compare customer activity across both guest checkouts and registered accounts, and they needed the solution to be fast, sortable, and easy for staff to use.
The first attempts at modifying the built-in WooCommerce customer and users screens ran into limitations. Guest customers were excluded from the standard Users list, and full-store aggregation caused performance problems. The result was a reporting workflow that was too limited for real operational use.
Solution:
Developed a custom WordPress plugin that adds a dedicated Customer Rankings report inside WooCommerce admin. The plugin pulls order data, groups customers by billing email, and presents a clean, paginated view that includes both guest and registered customers.
The report is designed to stay lightweight and practical. Instead of forcing WooCommerce to do heavy calculations on every page load, it uses a controlled paginated approach so staff can quickly sort and review customer data without slowing down the backend.
Key Features
- Custom WooCommerce admin submenu for customer rankings
- Guest and registered customer support through billing email grouping
- Paginated reporting (50 orders per page) to keep performance stable
- Sortable columns for orders, items purchased, total spend, and last order date
- Search by name or email
- Clean admin UI built for quick decision-making
- Lightweight plugin structure that can be maintained independently of the theme
Impact
The client now has a focused reporting tool that turns raw order data into actionable insights. Staff can quickly identify top customers, review purchasing patterns, and spot high-value accounts without jumping between screens or exporting spreadsheets.
The plugin also improved admin usability by removing the need to rely on WooCommerce’s default customer views, which were not built for this kind of ranking workflow. Most importantly, it created a scalable reporting solution that fits naturally into daily WordPress and WooCommerce operations.
Result
What exceeded the client’s expectations was delivering 3 distinct ways to determine “top customers” in one simple interface:
-
Order Volume: Spot customers who order most frequently (repeat business)
-
Items Purchased: Identify bulk buyers and high-quantity purchasers
-
Lifetime Spend: Rank by total revenue contribution
Instead of one ranking metric, they now have three lenses to analyze their customer base, making it easy to segment customers for marketing, support, and re-engagement campaigns. The paginated design also kept the report fast even on stores with thousands of orders.
